How to Choose an Industrial Gasket and Profile: Material, Cross-Section and Application Guide

A guide explaining the key criteria for choosing industrial gaskets and profiles, including material, cross-section, compression, temperature and operating environment.

EPDM Dual-Durometer Profiles
Summary

Choose the right industrial gasket and seal profile by evaluating cross-section, material, temperature, compression and operating environment together.

Industrial gaskets and profiles used in machinery, equipment, cabins, control cabinets and custom-built applications perform a variety of functions such as sealing, edge protection, vibration damping and closing gaps between surfaces. The right product should be chosen by evaluating the operating conditions, not just the shape of the cross-section.

1. Define the Function of the Application

First, clarify what the profile is expected to do: seal against water and dust, reduce air leakage, protect a sheet metal edge, hold glass in place or reduce vibration and impact? Two profiles that look the same may be designed for different purposes.

2. Material Selection

Materials such as EPDM, PVC, sponge elastomers, silicone and nitrile have different performance characteristics. Conditions such as outdoor exposure, temperature, oil, chemical contact and UV exposure must be taken into account when choosing the material.

3. Cross-Section and Dimensions

Besides overall width and height, the grip channel, bulb diameter, lip length and contact points also matter. When looking for a replacement for an existing product, the most reliable comparison is made on the cross-section.

4. Compression and Mating Surface

A sealing profile must compress in a controlled way when the door or cover closes. Too little compression can weaken the seal, while excessive compression can increase the closing force and shorten the service life of the profile.

5. Mounting Method

The profile may be push-fit into a channel, clip onto a sheet metal edge, be self-adhesive or have a special attachment geometry. The mounting method should be assessed together with product design and ease of service.

Standard Product or Custom Profile?

Many applications can be solved with standard profile options. However, if there are special requirements in terms of dimensions, material or cross-section, a project-based profile evaluation may be needed. In this case, it is important to share the technical drawing, sample, estimated quantity and operating conditions.

See the EPDM Dual-Durometer Profiles page for EPDM solutions, Custom Sponge Profiles for custom sponge solutions and Custom PVC Profiles for PVC options.

Product Selection Based on a Sample

If you do not know the product code, sharing a short sample of the existing gasket or a clear cross-section photo together with its dimensions makes it easier to evaluate suitable alternatives.
