Learn how to find the right seal or profile without a drawing or part number, using a sample, cross-section photo, panel or glass thickness and key dimensions.
A technical drawing or part number is not always available for a seal used on a machine, vehicle, cabin or special equipment. Even then, you can still search for a suitable seal or profile. The best starting point is to document the cross-section of the existing part and its installation conditions as accurately as possible.
What Information Is Needed First?
Without a technical drawing, a clear cross-section photo of the profile, its overall width and height, the channel or grip dimension, the sheet metal or glass thickness and a photo of the installation area provide the key information.
How Should the Cross-Section Photo Be Taken?
If possible, cut the profile at a clean, uncompressed point. Hold the cross-section square to the camera, use good lighting and include a ruler or caliper in the image to show the dimensions.
Why Is a Photo of the Application Needed?
Two profiles with similar-looking cross-sections may not be interchangeable because of a different compression direction or mounting method. That is why a photo showing how the door, lid, glass or sheet metal edge meets the seal is so valuable.
What If the Material Is Unknown?
Users do not always know whether a profile is made of EPDM, PVC, sponge rubber or another material. If the operating conditions of the application are shared, such as outdoor exposure, temperature, oil, fuel, water or UV, suitable material options can be assessed more accurately.
When Is It Necessary to Send a Sample?
If an exact match cannot be made from photos and dimensions, a physical sample inspection is preferred. To learn how to prepare the sample, see our guide How to Prepare a Seal and Profile Sample.
Profile Matching with Güçlas
Even without a technical drawing or part number, you can share your existing sample, cross-section photo and application details with Güçlas. Suitable existing profile options or the need for custom production can be evaluated based on this information.
