How to Prepare and Send a Seal and Profile Sample

How to prepare a seal or profile sample for an equivalent or custom production project, and which dimensions and application details to include.

EPDM Dual-Durometer Profiles
Summary

Learn how to prepare a seal sample for equivalent or custom production: choosing the right piece, dimensions, cross-section photos and application details.

If you want to find an equivalent for an existing seal or develop a custom profile, a properly prepared sample makes the technical evaluation much easier. A piece of profile alone is not enough; whenever possible, it should be sent together with dimensions and application information.

How Long Should the Sample Be?

Choose a piece intact enough to show the cross-section, surface texture and flexibility of the profile. Very short, crushed or heavily deformed pieces can make accurate measurement difficult.

Where Should the Sample Be Cut From?

If possible, take the sample from the least deformed section. Door corners, pinched sections or areas that have been under compression for a long time may not reflect the true cross-section.

What Information Should Accompany the Sample?

  • The machine, vehicle or product where the profile is used
  • A photo of the installation area
  • Sheet metal, channel or glass thickness
  • Approximate quantity required
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Operating conditions such as water, dust, UV, oil and temperature
  • The existing product or part number, if known

Can Sending a Photo Be Enough?

Some standard profiles can be matched from a clear cross-section photo and dimensions. However, with profiles that look very similar, differences in channel size, wall thickness or material mean a physical sample gives a more reliable result.

Equivalent or Custom Production from a Sample

If the existing product is covered by the Güçlas product range, a suitable alternative can be evaluated. If there is no standard equivalent, a custom production option can be considered depending on the usage quantity and technical requirements.

You can use the Güçlas contact page to share your sample, photos and project details.
